The flu season is upon us, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has provided valuable information for the identification and treatment of flu symptoms in children.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses and affects the nose, throat and lungs. The flu differs from the common cold in that it comes on suddenly and includes symptoms such as fever, runny/stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting can accompany the flu, but is more common in children than adults.

While the flu can be active year-round, the height of the season is projected to begin in early October and last through May. The Pennsylvania Department of Health and Human Services lists the cases of flu for Beaver County so far this flu season at 877.

A CDC tip sheet for the flu season is available here.
