School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month—a time to salute the work of our volunteer school board members and to celebrate public education. This special recognition of School Board members reflects our combined commitment to leadership and accountability assuring that ALL children succeed. It’s an exciting and challenging time in public education. They are citizens whose decisions affect our children and build our communities. Showing appreciation for the important work of school boards should be a year-round process, but too often we neglect to recognize the dedication and hard work of these men and women who represent us. This January, the staff and students of our district are asking all members of the community to take a moment and thank a school board member. Thank you to the men and women who dedicate countless personal hours to ensure the needs of our community are met by our public schools. We salute the public servants of the Ambridge Area School District whose dedication and civic responsibility make local control of public schools in our community possible. We applaud them for their vision and voice to prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders.

The Ambridge Area Board of School Directors is accepting letters of interest to fill a vacancy on the Board for a term through November 2021. Community Stakeholders,

Please find a letter with statistics and information, specific to the negative impacts that the charter and cyber schools are having on our district. Currently, the district costs to support students who leave the Ambridge bricks and mortar to attend these outside options is over 7 million dollars per year. This is not sustainable. While district administrators and the school board are working diligently to encourage our families to commit to the district or return from these outside placements, we still need our legislators to create a more fair and equitable process for funding the charter schools.

You often see advertisements that suggest these placements are free. While they are free to families, they continue to cost the district much more than it costs to educate them in the district. We take pride in our academic programs and offerings. We have increased AP course offerings at the high school level as well as the number of students participating in these courses. We have four preK classrooms that are fully funded by federal monies. We also have a very successful primary literacy program, A2i, which is preparing our students to be reading at or above grade level by third grade. This ability assures that students will be much more successful and more likely to graduate with the literacy needed for success in higher grades.

I hope that you will take the time to review the attached letter. Please feel free to revise, but consider sending this to state legislators. The contacts for those representatives can also be found on this page.

Thank you for your continued support for public education and the Ambridge Area School District.

LOCAL SCHOOL DIRECTOR HONORED

Long-term school directors are being honored across the state by the Pennsylvania School Board Association at local board meetings. School directors are recognized for years of service from 8 to 36 years.

Mary Jo Kehoe, a member of the Ambridge Area School Board, received recognition for 12 years of service. She was presented with a certificate adding her to the PSBA “Honor Roll of School Board Service.”

School directors continually are spending more of their personal time on school-related activities. Fifty-four percent of them devote 16 hours or more a month to school board business. That shows a real commitment on their part.

They exemplify leadership and dedication, giving unselfishly to their communities, students and the public schools. Their efforts, along with those of their fellow board members, reflect their dedication to giving our children the opportunity to gain knowledge through the best education system possible.

Thank you Mary Jo for you commitment to the Ambridge Area School District!

The Board of School Directors have completed their rounds of School Board Meetings at the various District school buildings.  Through December, 2016 all School Board Meet and Discuss Meetings and School Board Meetings will be held at the Ambridge Area High School Auditorium.
