Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!

The staff at Highland is excited to jump into another school year at Highland. Over the summer, we spent a great deal of time planning new initiatives to enhance the services provided to the students at Highland Elementary School.

Our fist initiative is the implementation of the Student Assistance Program (SAP). A team comprised of teachers, the social worker, the nurse, the academic and behavior coach, and I will meet weekly to discuss interventions for students that are struggling both academically and/or behaviorally. Parents as well as school staff can make referrals to the program. We hope this additional level of support will ensure that all students get the support they require to find success this year.

Secondly, we are introducing a new school-wide positive behavior support system. After much reflection, we felt that the STAR program implemented in the past needed updated to best meet the needs of our students. As such, we will be kicking off the Highland HERO program focusing on the character traits of honesty, engagement, respect and optimism. Throughout the year, we plan to introduce our students to everyday heroes that work to make our community a better place, reinforcing the idea that everyone has the ability to make a positive impact on the world. Please be sure to ask your students about our theme song!

Finally, this year, we will be sending home a Thursday packet. These packets will include all of the information information that you need to know about the events happening here at Highland. During the final Thursday packet of each month, we will include the Highland calendar for the next month detailing meetings, school dances, field trips and spirit days. Recognizing that some people prefer to get their information electronically, we will be posting these packets on Thursday both in paper form as well as via our building webpage. Please check your student’s book bag or the Highland webpage each week to stay abreast of the exciting things that happen at Highland this year.

As always, we hope that parents will support Highland by attending extra-curricular events. Important events to be aware of during the first month of school include:

September PTO meeting – Tuesday, September 3 at 6:00 P.M.

Book Fair - Week of September 9 (during library time and also open house)

      Open House – Thursday, September 12 from 6:00-8:00 P.M.

Homecoming Parade – Friday, September 20 at 5:45 P.M. (please consider marching with Highland)

      Back-to-School Dance – Friday, September 27 6:00-8:00 P.M.

We are looking forward to a great year at Highland Elementary!
