L. Joan Welter, Ed. D., is a longtime resident of the Ambridge Area School District.
Dr. Welter has over 30 years of experience as an educator. She previously served as the Director of Human Resources for the North Allegheny School District. Prior to that, Dr. Welter’s administrative experiences include, Assistant Superintendent of the Hampton Township School District, Principal of North Allegheny School District Intermediate High School, Principal of Seneca Valley School District Middle School, and Assistant Principal of Shaler Area School District Middle School. She also completed administrative internships at Upper Saint Clair and Woodland Hills School Districts.
Dr. Welter’s educational background includes, a Doctoral Degree and Masters Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education from Ball State University, Indiana.
Dr. Welter’s many honors include:
- Tech and Learning Magazine, Technology Leader of the Year
- Grant Recipient, $74,000, while working in the Hampton Township School District
- Duquesne University – Life-Changing Educator Award
- Pennsylvania Distinguished Title I Schools award for three consecutive years
- Shaler Area Middle School 1994-1996 National Blue Ribbon School of Distinction
Dr. Welter has been married for 33 years to her husband Jim. Their two sons attended, and as Dr. Welter states, ‘greatly benefited from their education in the Ambridge Area School District’. Their son, Avery, is currently attending East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee and is enrolled in a Bluegrass, Old Time, Country Music Program. Their younger son, Noah, is attending Slippery Rock University, majoring in Communication.
Dr. Welter is honored to be adding a new chapter to her educational career by serving as the Superintendent for the Ambridge Area School District.
