Students in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade were awarded a certificate for being chosen as April’s Physical Education Star Students of the month. Mrs. Parisi has dedicated a bulletin board in the gym to honor her students. Mrs. Parisi has established the following criteria for the award. Not absent on a Gym Day, do an excellent job calling out the warm-ups, a good role model in class, extra effort, and encouraging fellow classmates to do their best. The Science Outreach Center at Saint Francis University is pleased to announce the winners of the
2018 Pennsylvania Statistics Poster Competition. The annual state competition is in its twenty-second
year overall, and is coordinated for the tenth year by Saint Francis University. Cash awards of $96 for
first place, $72 for second, $48 for third, and $24 for fourth in each of four grade levels are awarded to
the students who submitted winning posters.
External financial support is provided by several regional and state professional organizations, including the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Association of Teachers of Mathematics of Philadelphia and Vicinity, Laurel Highlands Mathematics Alliance, Mathematics Council of Western Pennsylvania, and the Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh Chapters of the American Statistical Association (ASA).
A statistics poster is a display containing two or more related graphics that summarize a set of data, look at the data from different points of view, and answer specific questions about the data.
The 474 posters submitted included 123 in the K-3 grade category, 209 from grades 4-6, 44 from grades 7-9, and 98 from grades 10-12. These 474 posters were submitted from a total of 778 students! Judging for the state competition was held on Saturday, March 17, 2018.
Winning posters were then submitted to the National Statistics Poster Competition, which is coordinated by the American Statistical Association. Congratulations to all the students who created and submitted the winning and honorable mention posters, and to the teachers who guided the students.

This work of art was created by the 2017-18 art students in conjunction with artist Lindsay Huff and art teacher Ms. Zbrzezny. Each year, our Interact club helps to recognize Children’s Grief Awareness week with several activities. During lunch periods, students write messages to loved ones who have passed away on Hope butterflies and hang them on a tree fabricated by student artists. The tree represents changes or seasons of life as well as growth and rebirth.
This upcycled artwork will serve as an interactive mural that will be used to house Hope butterflies year after year at our middle school. It took around 190 students 2 months to create from scratch. The boards were first measured and laid out to draw and color code the initial sketch idea. Next, cans of all colors donated by students and the community were cut down to size and the mural was filled in like a mosaic. It was a labor of love and a true test in GRIT.
This Artist Residency Project was supported in part by the Arts in Education Partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. The Arts in Education Partner serving Allegheny, Beaver, Greene, and Washington counties is Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
Congratulations to the following students who have been voted by their peers to have given the best combined informative and persuasive charity speeches in Ms. Wandel’s 8th grade English classes. These students will have donations made in their names to the charities on which they presented.

John Chalupiak, a fifth grader at State Street Elementary School, and Elias Shingleton, a senior at Ambridge High School, visited the Beaver County Courthouse today as part of Law Day. John won the honor of attending the event after placing secon in the bookmark contest for grades 4 and 5. The theme of the contest was "The Three Branches of Government." He received a $30 gift card, a medal and certificate. Elias received a $500 scholarship award for his accomplishments in the Mock Trial. Both were recognized at the courthouse and treated to a luncheon sponsored by the Beaver County Bar Association.

It is with pleasure that we announce the Technology Student Associations (TSA) State conference results.
Twenty-seven high school TSA members attended the 40th annual TSA State conference. The conference took place on April 18-21, 2018 and was held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Each student member competed in several individual and team events. There are over 80 different events to compete in, many of them involving public speaking, problem solving or STEM concepts. Ambridge took two 3rd place spots, one 9th, two 10th and several finalists (top 12).

High School Advisors, Mr. Ben Holmes, Mr. Jason Roos and Mrs. Kristin Holmes accompanied the students over the 3 days and extend congrats on their accomplishments. On April 12th MCJROTC had two guest speakers discussing the importance of American Citizenship. Mr. Les Szell, an immigrant and political refugee from Hungary, came to USA in 1957, at age 11, when his family escaped the communist Russian regime. He talked about freedom, opportunity and hope for the future by living in the United States. Mrs. Floriana Jones immigrated from Italy when she got married in 1977. Her mother was hidden in a wall when the German Soldiers went house to house looking for young girls when Nazi Germany invaded her country during WW II. She said to always stand up for your country and your freedom and that she owes the United States for a wonderful life! She quoted, “my freedom was bought by the blood of the American Armed Forces who liberated Europe.”
Mrs. Jamie Connelly of the Beaver County Educational Trust (BCET) visited Highland’s STEAM classroom on April 15. The BCET awarded the Highland Elementary STEAM program a grant for $500. The grant entitled "Immersive Learning through Collaboration" was written by Mrs. Nicole Darroch. Grant monies were used to purchase four Breakout EDU kits. Breakout EDU kits turn the classroom into an academically-focused escape room. Students use teamwork and critical thinking to solve puzzles in order to open the locked box. Games are used for all age levels and content areas. The Breakout kits have been a welcome addition to our STEAM classroom. We are grateful to the BCET and Mrs. Connelly for their support of our elementary STEAM program."
