School is almost  back in session and the big Homecoming Game is just around the corner! Ambridge Area School Board of Directors approved the transfer of Mr. David Turk to the newly-created 10-month position of Middle School Assistant Principal at the July 17 meeting. Mr. Turk previously served as a health and physical education teacher at Ambridge Area High School since 2011. He will begin his duties immediately at an annual salary of $70,000.

 

Mr. Turk holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock University (Pa.) and earned his Pennsylvania Teaching Certification in Health and Physical Education. He also holds a Master of Education degree in School Administration (Principal K-12) from California University (Pa.).

 

He began his professional career in the Pittsburgh Public Schools in January 2010, where he served as a substitute teacher at Perry High School. He later became a building substitute with Pittsburgh Public Schools, serving in a variety of roles including Assistant to the Administration and Assistant Technology Technician. He was hired by Ambridge Area School District to work as a health and physical education teacher, a position he held from 2011 to present.

 

Mr. Turk said he is looking forward to serving in his new role at the Middle School, and thanked the School Board for providing him with the opportunity. “I appreciate the opportunity that I’ve been given, and I look forward to working with all of the Middle School staff and most important of all, I look forward to working with the students,” he said.

 

Superintendent Dr. Jo Welter said Mr. Turk will be an incredible asset to the Middle School. “His focus is on a mentorship program for the Middle School students so that our students have guidance and mentorship from the minute they enter the school until the time they leave, and so parents have a dedicated liaison. I’m very excited to have him working with us.”

Orientation for all 6th grade students, as well as new 7th and 8th grade students, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, at the Middle School. Parents are encouraged to attend. The orientation is for incoming 6th graders and new students only. Current 7th and 8th graders will receive their 2019-2020 Schedules via USPS and do not need to attend orientation. Students in the Life Skills/Autistic Support classroom at the Middle School took advantage of the nice weather and cleaned the Middle School courtyard as a Community-Based Instruction activity.  Students worked together to clear the flower beds and patio area of leaves, weeded flower beds and cleaned off the picnic tables. Thank you for helping to beautify the courtyard!

Students in the 8th Grade Advanced Science classes fielded the annual Bradys Run Stream Study on May 22. Standard categories were Environment and Ecology, Mathematics, Science and Technology.

 

In each category, students were required to do the following:

 

4.1.10B-Explain the relationship among landforms, vegetation and the amount and speed of water.

4.1.10A-Describe changes that occur from a stream’s origin to its final outflow.

4.1.10C-Describe the physical characteristics of a stream and determine the types of organisms found in aquatic environments.

4.1.10E-Identify and describe natural and human events on watersheds and wetlands.

4.3.10B-Explain how multiple variables determine the effects of pollution on environmental health, natural processes and human practices.

4.3.10C-Explain biological diversity as an indicator of a healthy environment.

4.6.10A-Explain the biotic & abiotic components of an ecosystem & their interaction.

4.7.10C-Identify and explain why adaptations can lead to specialization.

4.8.10C-Analyze how human activities may cause changes in an ecosystem.

More Science Olympiad fun! For this exercise, students had to work as a team to solve this engineering challenge.  They had to make a structure that had one part at least 122 cm tall, one wall that was at least 122 cm long or wide, some sort of roof, an opening, at least three walls, and a student had to be able to sit under the roof.
